Data recovery floppy disk shareware will offer you a demo. "Freeware" will analyze your disk for free; but to recover your data will cost you.
When you recognize a data loss problem relax, count to 100, do some deep breathing exercises, or have brew (or two). You need to analyze the situation first before trying to fix it.
Operating systems consider deleted files as just free space on the drive, so with any write operations to that partition or disk here is always the probability of loosing these files forever by overwriting them. Therefore it's not recommended to restore files or an image into the same partition. In case of recovering a physical drive you must recover and save the information to another physical hard drive.
Beware of "do-it-yourself" software downloads and remote recovery services. They may solve your problem or make it worse. Remember that if it is a physical problem (70% of cases have some physical failure) software won't help.
